Beat Cabin Fever with Safe Day Trips from San Diego

It may not be a typical year for family vacations, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get out of the house and enjoy time in the great outdoors. Stretch your legs and enjoy some of San Diego’s scenic wonders and historic sites with spectacular day trips in and around San Diego.

Stroll Through Old Town

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park offers visitors a glimpse into Mexican and early-American periods from 1821 to 1872. This day trip is right in the center of San Diego, so it’s easy to access. There is a core of restored historic buildings and others reconstructed to depict this historic period. While the Visitor Center and museums remain closed, most restaurants and some shops have re-opened with safety procedures in place. Presidio Park has re-opened and offers a lot of shade. So, pack a picnic lunch and take a hike to this site.

Enjoy a Scenic Seaside Walk

While the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve remains closed, the State Beach is open for passive and active recreation. It’s only about a 20-minute drive from La Jolla. These miles of unspoiled shoreline offer stunning views and lots of wildlife. It’s a particularly great spot for birdwatchers. Park at the North Beach lot from 7:15 a.m. to sunset.

Go to the Desert

The Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, about two hours east of San Diego, feels a world away from the rest of the coast. Currently open from sunrise to sunset, the park offers 600,000 acres of sweeping vistas with cliffs, canyons, wildflowers, washes, palm groves and cacti. The rocky landscape is home to native bighorn sheep, roadrunners, loggerhead shrike birds and other wildlife. Pack a lunch and hit one of the hiking trails that allow you to experience the wonders of the Colorado Desert. It’s tough terrain, but the stunning scenery makes it worth the day trip.

An Apple a Day …

Take a drive about 60 miles from San Diego to beautiful Julian, a small, Gold Rush-era town located in the Cuyamaca Mountains. The town retains its historic character with restored shops and restaurants. But what really drives folks to the area is the apple orchards. Apple Season is August through October, so set aside time to visit a u-pick orchard. Most are family-owned and many feature fun family activities in addition to the apples. Sip on some cider, and you’ll definitely want to chow down on the apple pie. There are also hiking trails, parks and a self-guided History Walk to enjoy.

Of course, stay on top of state-mandates and watch for closures. Face coverings are required in public or anytime you’re within six feet of others. But, they are not required when you are enjoying outdoor recreation with your family or household members.
