Top Spring, Early Summer Activities to Hit in San Diego

With winter in the rear-view window, it’s time to think about a spring vacation! San Diego is beautiful any time of year, but in spring, it really shines.

Spring brings thoughts of flowers blooming, so a perfect activity for the season is The Flower Fields, which opened March 1 at Carlsbad Ranch. An annual spring rite of passage, the site draws more than 100,000 visitors annually. It’s 50 acres of dazzling, colorful ranunculus flowers set on a hillside.

Speaking of flowers, the annual Cherry Blossom Festival takes place March 16-22 at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park. From March 16-19, some vendors will give visitors a sneak peek at what they can expect over the weekend. On March 20-22, the full festival opens with unique crafts, performances, a beer and sake garden and a tea garden.

Sample your way around the world with SeaWorld’s Seven Seas Craft Beer & Food Fest March 7 through May 3. A sampler card allows you to taste international cuisine at a variety of vendors. You’ll also be about to sip a unique selection of craft beers and meet a different brewer each weekend.

Rowing season starts with the San Diego Crew Classic April 4-5 on Mission Bay. The Crew Classic is not only a competitive athletic event, it’s also a social gathering where you can enjoy great food, a beer garden with local craft breweries and shopping. It’s a two-day regatta that consists of more than 100 races with more than 4,000 athletes.

On April 25-26, the Mission Fed Artwalk fills 16 blocks of Little Italy. The weekend-long arts and culture event features more than 350 artists. The event showcases painting, sculpture, glasswork, photography and fine jewelry. Enjoy live music, dance performances, interactive art experiences, street food, family-friendly art projects at KidsWalk and more. The free event runs from 11-6 each day between Ash and Grape streets.

Joins more than 20,000 runners for the Rock N’ Roll Marathon on May 30-31. It’s a block party that runs for 13.1 or 26.2 miles. The festivities begin with a 5K through Balboa Park on Saturday. On Sunday, runners from around the world start at Balboa Park, run through Little Italy and downtown to end up at Waterfront Park. Musical performances along the way give the event a high-energy appeal.

Baseball fans can catch some action as the San Diego Padres opens its 50th season March 26 against the Colorado Rockies. The Padres play at Petco Park in downtown, where kids will love the interactive area complete with playground equipment and a Wiffle ball field.
