With longer and warmer days of spring upon us, it’s a great time to get out on the waters around San Diego on a kayak or standup paddleboard. Whether you’re a beginner or an avid paddler, awesome opportunities abound with a plethora of great places to launch and paddle.
If you want to launch from sandy shores, hit up San Onofre State Beach. It’s a well-known surf break, but head to the southern end of the park. Be sure to follow the signs for where kayaking is allowed. This a one of California’s most popular beaches with beautiful sandstone bluffs, as well as sightings of whales and dolphins just offshore.
Another beautiful spot for kayaking and paddle sports is Mission Bay, with its 27 miles of shoreline. Mission Bay Park is the largest aquatic park of its kind in the country, with several boat launches and docks. It’s also one of the busiest parks in the area, especially on the weekends. Avoid the crowds by launching from Vacation Isle Park on a weekday. And keep an eye out for sea lions.
San Diego Bay is larger and a little tougher to navigate than Mission Bay, but experienced paddlers will be rewarded with spectacular views of downtown and Cabrillo National Park. Launch from Harbor Island Park at about 4 p.m. and paddle out just in time to catch an incredible sunset.
Do some exploring with a paddle of La Jolla Cove. Discover sea caves, coastal cliffs, and plenty of marine life. You’ll feel like a true adventurer paddling through the caves. There are also great spots for snorkeling, as it’s adjacent to La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve where visibility can exceed 30 feet. If you don’t travel with a kayak, no worries. There are plenty of rentals along La Jolla Cove, including La Jolla Kayak and Bike and Kayak Tours.
Want to combine paddling with fishing? Head to Lower Otay Lake where you can cast for a trophy-sized bass. Lower Otay Reservoir is also home of the U.S. Olympic training center for rowing sports, so you’re bound to get a good workout. But take note: The lake is only open Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.
