Check out Unique Events to Kick Off the Season

Catch all the excitement of awesome festivals and tough competitions when you spend time in San Diego during the coming months.

First up is the Tequila and Taco Music Festival, set April 25-26 at Embarcadero Marina Park North in downtown San Diego. It’s two days of fun in the sum with some of your favorite things. Sample top-shelf tequilas, chow down on gourmet street tacos and enjoy live music, margaritas, craft beer art and more!

The celebration begins at 11:30 a.m. each day and continues through 6 p.m., though the tequila sampling ends at 3:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit The Gen Giammanco Foundation, which provides financial support to deserving college-bound student-athletes. Note: You must be 21 years of age or older to enter the festival, but that makes sense, right? Tickets are $15 to $40.

On May 9, take to the skies during the 72nd Annual Ocean Beach Kite Festival, the oldest running children’s kite fest in the country. Kids of any age will enjoy this high-flying event set at Robb Athletic Field. Enjoy kite-making, decorating and flying. Spectators can also watch demonstrations from professional kite flyers, along with free games and family fun. Of course, there’ll be plenty of festival food as well as live music.

As for the competitions, one of the largest is the 2020 California State Games on July 17-19 at various venues around the city. More than 10,000 athletes compete in 26 sports during the Opening Ceremonies takes place on July 17 at the SDCCU Stadium. More than 15,000 spectators are expected to take part in the festivities. The fun starts at 4 p.m. with the free Athlete Fun Zone on the parking lot. Athletes lineup starting at 6:30 p.m. and ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. with the Athlete Parade, Parachute Jumpers, Live Entertainment, Torch Runners, the Lighting of the Cauldron and Fireworks.

Competitions include archery, badminton, basketball, BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, Climbing, Diving, Field Hockey, FootGolf, Ice Hockey, Junior Lifeguards, Judo, Pickleball, Powerlifting, Rugby, Skateboarding, Soccer, Softball, Surfing, Swimming and Synchronized Swimming.

Then the San Diego Surf Cup, which draws thousands of youth – wait for it – SOCCER players from across the nation. The Boys and Girls U15-U19 competition takes place July 25-27, while U9-U14 players take to the field Aug. 1-3 at either the SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside or Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar.
