Fill your belly while you watch one of San Diego’s iconic holiday traditions!
If a San Diego Christmas is on your wish list for Santa, you’re not alone. Escape the winter cold and spend your holidays in the land of sunshine and good vibes. There are plenty of ways to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year, and one of our favorites is the annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights.
For almost 50 years, the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights has dazzled and entertained locals and visitors alike and is the ultimate San Diego Christmas experience. More than 100,000 spectators come to watch the procession of about 80 boats that will be “decked out” with lights and decorations.
The parade is held on Dec. 9 as well as Dec. 16 and kicks off at 5 p.m. from the south end of Shelter Island. There are several places to catch a view of this spectacle of lights, but the best way to enjoy this event is with a great meal. Below are 5 of the best restaurants in San Diego to watch the parade!
Tom Ham’s Lighthouse
Since 1971, Tom Ham’s Lighthouse (yes, it’s a real functioning lighthouse!) has served some of the best seafood in the area as well as the most scenic. Try the Whole Roasted Fish with Summer Baja Slaw, Grilled Lime, and Thai Chili Vinaigrette or the Pan Seared Duck Breast. Tom Ham’s is also known for its craft beer.
Coasterra
Offering “Modern Mexican” cuisine, this restaurant has been named Best New Restaurant in 2016, and Best Mexican Dinner House in 2017 and 2018, among other accolades. Sweet Potato & Plantain Chili Rellano and Icelandic Cod will knock your socks off.
Bali Hai
Built in 1953, the iconic Bali Hai is one of the oldest classic mid-century Tiki structures. Known for its amazing Polynesian cuisine, you can’t go wrong with the Hawaiian Tuna Poke, the Wok-Fried Bass, or the Lamb Pad Thai. Did we mention the world-famous Mai Tai’s? Bali Hai has served more than two million of these tasty tropical drinks.
Peohe’s Coronado
Rachael Ray gives Peohe’s signature Halibut Mai’a and Pupu Platter two YUMS up, and so will you. Enjoy cuisine inspired by the Pacific Rim and formal or al fresco dining. Located at Coronado Ferry Landing you’ll have a great view of the boats and the bay, as Peohe’s features tiered seating for your viewing pleasure.
Carnitas’ Snack Shack
If your San Diego Christmas is a family affair with little ones, then the Embarcadero Shack has got you covered for the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights. On both Parade nights, this restaurant is pulling out all the stops for a special “Very Carnitas’ Christmas” featuring a photo station, live music, festive games, and other Christmas awesomeness. Grab a pork belly slider or a cauliflower taco and have a ball!
